It is the county seat of Shasta County, California and is also, the largest city within the Shasta Cascade area. Redding is the 4th largest city within the Sacramento Valley after Roseville, Sacramento and Elk Grove, California.

The city of redding was originally a travel and trade route connecting the Pacific Northwest to Central Valley in California. Redding is located along the Siskiyou Trail. From around the year 1000, the area of Redding was occupied by Native Americans of the Wintu tribe. During the start of the 19th century, trappers from the Hudson's Bay Company, along with members of the United States Exploring Expedition traveled through the location of Redding as they traversed the Siskiyou Trail.

Redding is situated at the very northwestern end of the Central Valley. This area transitions into the Cascade foothills. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains to the east, west and towards the north. There is fertile and abundant farmland found towards the south. Some of the outermost parts of the city are really a part of the Cascade foothills. Central and southern regions of the city are located within the Sacramento Valley.

The city of Redding is the Northern Sacramento Valley city and is considered the largest city between Eugene, Oregon and Sacramento, California. Redding had a significantly lower population during the year 2010 however of 177,223 that was a lot less compared to Medford Oregon's population of 203,206. The city along with its southern neighbor Red Bluff is both famous tourist locations as numerous tourists use these cities as bases to explore natural attractions within the area like Lassen Volcanic National Park and Lake Shasta.

In 2004, Redding City finished the Sundial Bridge situated at Turtle Bay. The bridge was designed by Santiago Calatrava, a noted Spanish architecht-engineer-artist. The bridge links the north and south campuses of the 1.2 km2 or 300 acre Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The pylon that holds up the bridge support cables also becomes a sundial which is only accurate during the summer solstice of June 21 or 22. The park offers a museum and spectacular sprawling gardens which stretch over 20 acres. The campus features changing and permanent exhibitions. Some of the exhibitions focus on art, natural science, history, forestry and horticulture.

In the year 1935 the historic Cascade Theatre opened. It has been restored and currently operates as a multi-use performance venue. On November 5th, 1999 it was listed on the California Register of Historic Resources and the theatre represents an example of Art Deco architecture. On January 17, 2002, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the 18th of March, the year 2000, the theatre was also a recipient of the Art Deco Society of California Preservation Award.
